Evanston, a city located on the shores of Lake Michigan just north of Chicago, was first settled in 1836. Named after U.S. politician and physician John Evans (1814-1897), it is home to a total population of 74,239 (2000).

Evanston’s unique blend of qualities facilitates connecting with the latest local news, and up to the minute information, comments, and blogs. Having all the aspects of a great city, Evanston offers opportunities to work, play and live near the lake, shops, transportation, and parks.


Evanston offers many educational opportunities for pre-school through post graduate work. With a successful, renown public educational system as well as private alternatives Evanston offers possibilities to many, many people.

Evanston is home to Northwestern University.

The Evanston Public Library has three locations: the Main Library at 1703 Orrington Ave, the North Branch at 2026 Central Street, and the South Branch at 949 Chicago Avenue. Borrower cards are free to Evanston residents, Evanston property tax payers, and Evanston businesses.
